Kairos is the community for young adults at The Falls Church. We are made up of those who are working, studying, single, married, and involved in a range of professions around the DC area. We hold in common a desire to live lives that are fully engaged in the different places where God has called us, and we believe that He designed Christian community to be part of that process.

On Sunday evenings we gather as a community at 6:30 in the main sanctuary at The Falls Church for a time of corporate worship through song, prayer, giving, and learning from the Word together. During the week and throughout the year, we are involved in many other things as a community, including small groups, outreach and service, fellowship, and weekend retreats.

Kairos History

Our beginnings . . .
In 1996, God gave us a name, Kairos, which is the Greek word for a unique moment in time, a predestined era. Kairos is "the God-given moment of destiny not to be shrunk from but seized with decisiveness, the floodtide of opportunity and demand in which the unseen waters of the future surge down to the present."1 As young adults in Washington, we live in such a moment.

Our vision is shaped by Ephesians 4:12-16, which picks up many of the themes that we want to be about: community, unity, diversity, body, servanthood, growth, truth, love, and fullness. In short, we want to be growing up "into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ." Paul tells us that God gifted people differently, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. . . . speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (NIV)

We began to gather on Sunday nights at The Falls Church in 1997 to worship, to study the Bible, and to grow in community together. In 1998, God gave us our values - Community, Outreach, Worship, and Spiritual Growth. And in 1999, God gave us the vision for our community, discerned through all those who considered Kairos their place for fellowship. We desire to be . . .
a community of growing Christians that transforms Washington and impacts the world for the glory of God.

Through another process of corporate discernment in 2000, God gave us a clear direction for our outreach vision following the model of Acts 1:8. We seek to intentionally serve the fatherless, the widowed, the poor, and the oppressed. Throughout our history, we have always found ourselves returning to God's heart for the poor and needy. We have forged relationships and outreach opportunities with local and global organizations and communities. We support Global Engagement Trips, micro-finance initiatives, partnerships in Africa, and ministry in Southeast DC. Two church plants have also been commissioned and sent out from Kairos, led by our two former Kairos Directors: Bill Haley in Northeast Washington, DC, and Tim Clayton in Portland, Maine. In January 2006, Dean Miller was called as our new Director.

Now . . .
Kairos is a community in its young adulthood. We earnestly desire to glorify God in all we are and in all that we do: in every aspect of our ministry and in every area of our lives. We believe God is going to continue to lead us, and that He will continue to do so through those He calls to Kairos - through our vocations and callings, passions, gifts, faith, and prayer lives. We will worship, pray, obey, and trust God who says, "My presence will go with you."

We long to grow in community towards each other and the Lord. The ways we pursue this are varied, including small groups, shared meals, passionate worship, healing prayer, and celebrating the Lord through the rhythms and beauty of liturgy.

This is a Kairos moment, in our lives and in our world. May we join together with one another in pursuing the Lord and His desires in the world.
